Safe reuse of wastewater and nutrient recovery in agriculture

Agriculture requires large quantities of good quality water for irrigation. Although utilization of modern irrigation technologies are increasing worldwide, these measures alone are not sufficient to meet the growing demand for water. Yet, treated wastewater is a valuable resource of water and nutrients which can reduce the gap in the water cycle and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. However, utilization of wastewater without proper treatment for irrigation causes health risks in many countries. Thus, development of necessary treatment technologies should be prioritized to ensure safe use of reclaimed wastewater. The aim of this session is to elaborate on the safe use of treated wastewater in agriculture particularly for food production. Treatment process selection and optimization of systems to maximize nutrient recovery are vital elements of this system. Although the use of treated wastewater in agriculture is a priority and in different stages of planning and development in many countries, there is a lack of adequate monitoring of this valuable resource. This session will address the need for integrating adequate water quality monitoring system and smart irrigation systems to ensure safe supply of reclaimed water for agriculture. The participants will also discuss the importance of treatment process selection, alternative disinfection methods, removal of emerging contaminants.
